he term xylene or xylol refers to a mixture of three aromatic hydrocarbon isomers which is used as solvent in the printing, rubber, and leather industries. Xylene is a clear, colorless, sweet-smelling liquid that is very flammable.

   We are mainly dealing with Hydrocarbon and it's sub products. Hydrocarbon compounds composed of hydrogen and carbon. Hydrocarbons are divided into two classes: aromatic and aliphatic, Hydrocarbon aliphatic contain benzene rings or similar rings of atoms, and aliphatic ( aleiphar, fat, oil), which do not contain aromatic rings. Hydrocarbon Aliphatic can be cyclic, like cyclohexane, or acyclic, like hexane. They also can be saturated, like hexane, or unsaturated, like hexane.

The simplest aliphatic compound is methane (CH4). Aliphatic include alkanes (e.g. paraffin hydrocarbons), alkenes (e.g. ethylene) and alkynes (e.g. acetylene). Fatty acids consist of an unbranched aliphatic tail attached to a carboxyl group.Most aliphatic compounds are flammable, allowing the use of hydrocarbons as fuel, such as methane in Bunsen burners, and acetylene in welding.

   Aromatic hydrocarbons are present in relatively large quantities in coal-gas extracts. The gas is washed with oil and the benzole distilled from the oil producing a benzole mixture. The benzole mixture contains about 70%v/v of benzene, about 20%v/v of toluene, about 5%v/v of the higher aromatics and about 5%v/v of aliphatic hydrocarbons, naphthenes and olefins (typical ofcoke oven benzole).

   The carbon/hydrogen ratio of the aromatics is high so their presence in coal gas give the gas its luminosity when burnt. Unlike aliphatic compounds which undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions, aromatic hydrocarbons undergo electrophylic substitution reactions.
